Thank you for this, you've perfectly articulated what I've been struggling with about this movie. I wasn't going to see it because, well, Barbie, female objectification, capitalism... but then I wanted to see it because everyone was going on about how amazing it was, and feminism, and, also, you know, Ryan Gosling... I haven't yet seen it, I'm going shortly, and I'm excited and uncomfortable in equal measure. But I'm still going.
I'm still recovering from the fact that my mum brought over a load of my old Barbies for my daughter play with. One of them talks, and says such nuggets of wisdom as "it's fun to shop with friends" and "do you want to braid my hair?" So I'm not overly excited about giving money to Mattel and celebrating feminism through one of the least feminist brands of all time. But I guess any feminism is good feminism? Plus, Ryan Gosling. Oh and my daughter asked me why one of the Barbies was wearing a swimsuit under her trousers and I had to explain about leotards and fashion in the 80s. 😆
YES to this. Saw it this week and actually loved it but had weird feelings which you've articulated for me! Thanks!
Yay! Pleased I could help haha
This has been my favourite take so far!!
Haha thanks!

Ah don't be uncomfortable, it's super fun. Everything is capitalism and it's ok to enjoy bits of it! (Because we don't have a choice <gross sobbing>)
